Description
Ever write a character and think "Wow, I hope I can kill this one off in a really horrible way"? Well, that's how this started. Originally I just wanted a few generic, faceless villains... but the more I drew them, the more their personalities came through, and the more I realized I actually liked them---in a love-to-hate sort of way---just because they're so fucking awful. And since Steven Universe is such an uplifting show about love and kindness and all that jazz, I thought it might be fun to exorcise a few demons by making some fangems that were just as horrid as possible. 
So, the militia from Hell. The Bitches That Get Shit Done. The ones that were kicked out of their original battalions and thrown together for lack of anywhere else to put them. They're the antagonists from a fanfic of mine (major trigger warnings for that!), but a nasty little part of me wants to write another story where I pit them all against each other. Maybe with an "I Spit On Your Grave"-style ending, cause lord knows they deserve it.
Their designs were loosely based on peoples from ancient Europe---for example, the Picts, the Vikings, and the Teutons. I'm trying to figure out the colour schemes for the rest of 'em.
I had some fun with their gem types... Hackmanite, which I can't believe is a real name, is known for changing colour completely when exposed to light, which I thought was a cool metaphor for her character. Hawky, someone named after an animal with incredible vision, has very little foresight or insight. Cat's Eye is the name of a novel by Margaret Atwood that has themes of bullying and feminism. And finally, 'Praz' and 'Broo' were just two stupid, loutish-sounding names I pulled out of my ass, and then was pleasantly surprised to find out there actually were gems that started with those sounds. *headdesk* This is the only time luck is on my side.

Yes I have written characters that I want to kill off. Some very, very badly. And writing a character like that can provide a kind of sick cathrasis; the more you can admit the wrongness of the world the more you can appreciate the love and beauty.
And these fucking cunts definitely fit that mold. Each one is brutally distinct in a very Rebecca sugar way; if Rebecca Sugar made cartoons for adult swim instead of cartoon network.
So on one level, they fit in with the aesthetic of Steven Universe. in the historic sense, I fucking love the historic inspirations you took for these guys. While they're all distinct they all fit together. They feel like a right proper mercenary unit; the kind that feature heavily in both the wars of Feudal europe and mangas like Berserk and novels like game of thrones.
there's a kind of unity that really isn't conventional military discipline. More like, it's animal submission that keeps the group in line. There's a social order and their purpose in homeworld's hierarchy is to punish the defective; defective in this case meaning whatever the fuck the diamonds say is defective. bigotry in any form is something that constantly adjusts the goal posts, and the more that people or gems are exhausted from trying to chase those goal's the less time and energy they have to realize their lives are fucked under the current system.
Each of these guys is distinct and their personality and look meshes perfectly. you've got a talent for both visual and literary storytelling; a pair of skilsl which often are not mutually inclusive.
